I leave the cell phone at home now and only, on occasion, do I take my camera with me. I would much rather pay attention to what I see and hear rather than to be distracted by the, "Hey, where is my camera? Can I get a picture of this?" A mental image requires one to pay attention to the details of the sight as it is unfolding; to file it away only to conjure it up during those inane faculty meetings and the like.</span><div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yesterday was no exception.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I was meandering along a path on an island on the Farmington River early yesterday morning. The sun had not quite broken through the clouds. The ground and rocks upon which I trod were still wet from a brief shower from the day before. I was picking my way through the trees when I glanced along at the river as I paralleled its journey. Up above were some riffles and pocket water that I swear I will get back to and fish. And as I continued to watch and make plans for my future excursion to the river I saw some movement in the water. The branches and leaves were all fighting for the same view as I so I had to peek through a small opening that yielded a surprise.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A very large doe was crossing the river just at the head of the riffles. Heck, I figured if she could cross there then I certainly could also make the cross as well. Then I noticed that something was hot on her heels. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">She had a fawn with her. The little guy was bound and determined to keep up with mom. Her fawn didn't tumble nor did it hesitate. I would have to say that I was even a bit jealous of how easily it crossed. And even after a brief swim through some water that was a bit too deep it did catch up. The two of them walked a few more steps and then stopped as they headed to the same river bank that I was on.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I thought she was staring in my direction and that she had detected my curious eyes. I held fast and didn't move because I did not want to startle either one of them back into the water.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But as I took in the scene before me I noticed she wasn't even looking in my direction. She was looking back at where they had come from.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All of this was unfolding while I was listening to the tranquil song of some orioles that were near. Off in the distance I could hear the boisterous noise of some crows. It was obvious that they were miffed about something. Then there was the sound of the water as it gently coursed over the moss covered stones in the riffle. And I was reminded of a silent movie.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And just like a silent movie has a pit orchestra that plays along as the scenes unfold, the doe and fawn moved through the water without a sound; the birds and riffles accompanying her movement along with her two fawns.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yes, she had a second one and that is what she was looking back for. The second fawn that was just a bit tinier than the first and had a splay of spots that reminded me of miniature spot lights. This little guy was a bit more hesitant. He did not venture out into the water with the same abandon as the first one did. This one was clearly more tentative with the path that the doe had taken. The water level was even deeper for this little guy but he did eventually make it across. </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The doe waited a bit and then bounded up the river bank and into the woods. I lost sight of her in the thick underbrush ahead of me. As I started back on my walk along the path I made every attempt to remain as quiet as possible. It was my plan to get ahead of them and then turn around to see where they went.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I rounded a corner and hunched down and waited. Sure enough.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Momma approached the path I had just walked up. She was about 10' from me and stopped. She had spotted me. Immediately her ears started flicking back and forth and she stomped her right foreleg. I stayed still while she looked at me with those Betty Grable eyes of hers. Deep, dark brown eyes that were wide open with worry. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I even held my breath in hopes of not scaring her away from her destination and watched her back with the same intent she had on me. Slowly I could see her relax and put her head down. Slowly she continued on across the island on some path that only she could see. She leapt over a fallen tree with all the grace you could imagine. The bigger of the fawns followed and performed the same graceful leap on a miniature scale. I waited to see what the smaller fawn would do. Sure enough, the smaller one took some quick steps bounded over the tree and off the three of them continued through the woods. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And all of this without a sound from them. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Not one twig crunching. No leaves brushed. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Silence. Just like the silent movies.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

The last couple of months my husband and I have been off and exploring new places. Some of the new places are on brand new rivers and some places are new spots on rivers we have previously explored.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have decided to try nekkid fly fishing. Now, while this title <i>might </i>suggest wader-less fishing and the like I can promise you it doesn't. It is based on leaving the cell phone home and going without - GASP - any email, texting, or other computer based technology. Pure and simple. Just the three of us heading out to sights new.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGtuhK52fnZtwdI0bYGkE4r7ADlLEcpav8VvDGyna7kaIC_IK1rfw7jHJcaP0M-9tWevlDmUYTXYgATeAXzEw2V8ptIyHwAJxN3j_n7M2agGgPw-PPSZyZAvoEMR_klvu8o8NhACwnWest/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGtuhK52fnZtwdI0bYGkE4r7ADlLEcpav8VvDGyna7kaIC_IK1rfw7jHJcaP0M-9tWevlDmUYTXYgATeAXzEw2V8ptIyHwAJxN3j_n7M2agGgPw-PPSZyZAvoEMR_klvu8o8NhACwnWest/s1600/001.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I try to explain to my kids at school that they really are at a disadvantage with all their gizmos and tech attachments that they can't seem to shake. If only they knew what they were missing as a result of their electronic distraction.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The sound of a fish as it ever so briefly fires out of the water from chasing an emerger for an appetizer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Taking a few moments to look at the flowers on the forest floor as they make their way out for the first time this year. Or to gaze at the patterns found on the trees as the lichens take hold and prosper.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Or just the listening to our fishing buddy as she finds some sunlight to lay in while she patiently watches and waits. Our buddy; she is getting old and her hips ache and she sure isn't as spry as she used to be but she still really enjoys going out with us.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig1qTjv6k-3zJJd693TZRxoasEXlEbRZ4PSS1DlTkU8_5gXKJdSNukkf76vjpmdqgIMpEMrUotH8yc3JCJ1OfA9bhuUtQtVrms4XI_hPebNNDohKE9Xt9B599ttIL-6m-nJn6wJzLc0rry/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig1qTjv6k-3zJJd693TZRxoasEXlEbRZ4PSS1DlTkU8_5gXKJdSNukkf76vjpmdqgIMpEMrUotH8yc3JCJ1OfA9bhuUtQtVrms4XI_hPebNNDohKE9Xt9B599ttIL-6m-nJn6wJzLc0rry/s1600/007.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And it isn't just the sounds. It is thinking "where are they?".</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
the hell down and enjoying the moment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's thinking of tactics, flies, and watching the currents. It's just....</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, what a great summer this one turned out to be! Our oldest son, Brian got married Aug. 10th. in Sheridan, Wyoming. Christie is a wonderful gal and they make a fantastic couple. It was a long 8 months waiting for the wedding and now that it is all over I wonder how quickly the time did go by. I had four weeks out in Wyo. and can't believe I am back home now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Along with the wedding preparations Rob and I did manage to get some fishing in. We haven't had both our boys together in many years so the one late morning when we could all get out and fish was extra special. That day will remain extra special for Rob; being out with both his boys.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Christie asked me if it was possible for me to tie some boutonnieres for the wedding party. So after getting some help and looking at salmon fly patterns I got to work. Her wedding colors were silver and blue so my goal was to work those into the flies while trying to keep each one unique. Once I finished them I carefully wrapped each one in tissue paper hoping she would not be disappointed but at the same time leaving myself plenty of time just in case she wanted me to re-do any of them. I quickly got word from Brian and Christie that the flies were just perfect! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used Brian's pickup and would drive to Ranchester, Wy. to fish Tongue Canyon. It was a brief ride of 25 miles and the view of wide open spaces was a sight to see. I will admit that I was a bit nervous heading out and fishing alone but.......</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was a spot that I had loads of fun at. I used Brian's short 3wt. rod for this river. There wasn't enough room for two handed casting so I was back to single hand and after a bit of a rough start it all worked out. The first fish turned out to be a 12" whitefish and after that it was all bows on that first day. The pool pictured above will be fondly remembered for the 14" bow that came rocketing out like a surface to air missile. He tailed danced across the water not once but twice and all I did was laugh. Seems like a very silly response but what a sight that was to see. At one point I took a break and shared the pool with an older gentleman who wanted to let his lab chase sticks and swim. Why not, right? So I got out and talked to Keith for what turned out to be an hour or so. He was pretty cool to talk to and he asked me what brought me to Wyoming. I told him that my son was getting married and I came out from Connecticut for the party. He laughed and said, "Seems like you have the best of both worlds; a wedding and fishing." How right he was! </div>

The next day when I met another lady fly fisherman. She told me her husband had a pistol and wanted to know if I had one too. I asked her why he needed a pistol. Her response was, "Well, for the bear, moose and cats that hang out in this canyon."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Really. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first trip there we ran into some guys from Minnesota. They had been fishing for a couple of hours and hadn't "caught shit" as one of them said. Seems someone told them to use streamers on this part of the river and that the big ol' double bunnies would do the trick. He asked me if I had any and I told him yes but I had already tied on my fly of choice - purple and starling #12 wet fly. It worked wonders down in the canyon and well, why change a fly that had a good track record? So off we head, Rob and I going farther down river from these guys just to give them some room. As I started to drift my fly down a seam I happened to look up and saw one of the Minnesota guys watching. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Streamers. Sure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When we got home we told Brian what they said to use. He laughed and told us that quite often the locals will tell out-of-staters to use stupid stuff like streamers just to goof on them. I never did put on a streamer. Both trips up there the wet fly worked like a charm with one fish after another hitting it hard.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second trip up there resulted in a rather unique way of fishing. Brian and Christie had headed off on their honeymoon and took the rods we had been using. So we borrowed a couple of different rods. We did have one reel that matched but the other reel was the one that I used on my Mystic 4wt. with the Ambush Triangle taper that line kept sinking. (I brought this reel out to use while teaching Brian how to two hand cast) Since the water was pretty skinny it didn't take too long for the fly to get caught up in the rocks. So I took off the Ambush line and scratched my head. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What to do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What to do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There is a saying, "Creativity is the mother of invention."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I went to work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I pulled out one of the leaders I normally use for Scandi casting. It has a 30# butt section and gradually tapers to 6x. The leader was about 16' long and my thinking was to attach it to the running line and see what happens. I loaded it up and with some quick steeple casts it worked pretty darn good. So good that the fish in the above picture was fooled and spanked that fly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not bad. </div>

The temperature had dropped some but more importantly the humidity also dropped. It finally felt pretty decent to be outside.<br />
<br />
I spent a nice quiet evening on a pretty stretch of the river and waited to see what was going on. It was, to say the least, very quiet.<br />
<br />
Slow to middling.<br />
<br />
It was so slow I could have counted the number of flies on one hand.<br />
<br />
However,unlike the last time I was able to get out, this time the fish did start to pop up now and then which is always good. They were just starting to get cranked up when the switch turned and they shut off.<br />
<br />
Slow to middling.<br />
<br />
Cripes, what a weird summer this is turning out to be.<br />
<br />
But since I was out I kept plugging along. I tied on one of the purple and starling wet flies and was blessed when a fairly good sized brookie snacked on that. I had to wait a bit before I got another one on and that time it was a rainbow.<br />
<br />
I hung out by myself until dark and then headed home, feeling somewhat refreshed by the cooler temps and lower humidity.<br />
<br />
That was it for Friday.<br />
<br />
Saturday the weather was starting to change again and not for the best. It would seem that the heat and humidity were making another run for us. So late in the afternoon a group of us headed to a different spot on the river where the water was nice and cold.<br />
<br />
Again, the insect activity was slow to middling. We didn't see more than two or three fish break the surface and we stayed there pretty late. For the first time I saw a water moccasin and for a small snake he sure had an attitude.<br />
<br />
I hate snakes.<br />
<br />
I was just getting ready to walk into the river when there he was, right at my feet. That guy may have been about 2 feet long but in my reality world that sucker was 10' long and nasty.<br />
<br />
It doesn't matter how long (or short) he was since he made me stop dead in my tracks. He stared at me with his tongue flicking in and out and you could tell what his thought bubble was, "Go ahead! Make my day!!"<br />
<br />
I hate snakes (did I mention that already?!) and this is the third snake so far this year. Shoot, there was one snake the other weekend that I got so close to I must have scared it because the darn thing shot up and out into the water in an instant. I don't know, nor do I care to know, what kind it was. It hit the water and headed downstream. But this one from Sat. was holding his ground and I graciously gave him all the room he needed.<br />
<br />
So once I decided that the coast was clear of snakes I headed out into one part of the pool and tied on another wet fly. It took a while but eventually I had a really nice rainbow on.<br />
<br />
Sunday we headed out but the temperature was starting to crawl back up into the 90's again. This time we did manage to see some, not a lot, but some bug activity. The cedar waxwings were diving on the water as soon as they could for a bite to eat. I was mesmerized by how close to the water they could get and barely dab at it and head back up to the trees. Those birds are really fun to watch.<br />
<br />
The fishing wasn't too bad early in the morning but as the temperature closed in on the 90's (again) and the humidity picked up the fishing bottomed out.<br />
<br />
I had planned on staying until after sun set but by 4pm I was toast. Literally.<br />
<br />
It was my turn to be slow to middling.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So far the summer can be summed up in a couple of words</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;"><b>HOT</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b>HUMID</b></span> - lows of 76F and dew point 72F. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>THUNDERSTORMS</b> - enough so that the house shakes</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: lime;">LIGHTNING</span> - oh yeah, it is popping all over</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>TORANDOES</b> - three the other week, one just yesterday</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: purple;"><b>FLASH FLOODS</b></span> - my all time favorite. River runs high, starts to get to normal and then runs high again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: orange; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><u>One of the best quotes to date is:</u></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: orange; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;"><span style="color: orange; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>"This has been a horrible fishing season for me. The only seasons I've had worse than this one were ones I didn't go fishing at all. I have high hopes it will turn around for me in the fall, but maybe I'm being foolishly optimistic."</b></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px; text-align: left;"><span style="color: orange; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 17px;"><b>When I read the above I just couldn't help but laugh. It has been tough. Last time I was out I was wet wading at night and still sweating. The water seems too warm too early this summer. So.... I am hanging out in the ol' fly tying room doing up some wet flies. Here is a small sample of what I have been doing.</b></span></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Whew. It's a hot one today ladies and gentlemen. The current temperature is 94F and the "real feel" is 100F. Yuck. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I call these my "full figure" flies. These won't lie down flat in the water because of the bump of dubbing at the front of the fly. I have used that same kind of bump when making my steelie flies so why not for some trout flies? I used a streamer hook and attached some 30# stren that I use to attach a #4 stinger hook. Cut off the streamer hook and voila - aren't they lovely?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO5cQ88PGIQlGhTtCFBwFrhmnB-s1WYP5FkI7T6Obz3QBb05miSp4IDgYqXQNBHwUuGWJTTiF9FF3ME6rhmm42NXahLJ0jswMUv-HmMnlpTs81i2lqfLEABvLTR0jxLkAKeEg3oI3HbjYn/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO5cQ88PGIQlGhTtCFBwFrhmnB-s1WYP5FkI7T6Obz3QBb05miSp4IDgYqXQNBHwUuGWJTTiF9FF3ME6rhmm42NXahLJ0jswMUv-HmMnlpTs81i2lqfLEABvLTR0jxLkAKeEg3oI3HbjYn/s320/013.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I prepare the streamer hooks by adding the bump of dubbing on first. Add a drop of super glue to the dubbing and let it dry. The bump is what keeps the profile of the fly when in the water.</div>
<div>

Our trip started up in Massachusetts where the Farmington River runs into the Colebrook Reservoir. The water was a decent level but man oh man, it was h-o-t.<br />
<div>
I rigged up the Mystic 4wt. switch and one of my leaders; only I took off the 30# butt section. Why? I left the intermediate poly-leader on and it is next to impossible to cast with that heavy butt section. The next time I am out I am going to take the poly-leader off and use the entire leader/tippet that I make.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I found some nice shade to cast and swing flies through and worked on that for a while. Since I was wet wading I eventually ended up kneeling down in the river as I tried to keep cool. I am sure that must have looked "strange" but hey, it worked. I was still able to reach all the water I wanted to and keep cool at the same time. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After working that part of the river for a while we moved on down to the Still River. With all the rain we have had it had a pretty good flow rate as well. We fished that for a spell as well. Didn't see any fish and no hits.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We moved on down to the Farmington at Church Pool because we found a friend of ours fishing under the bridge. Jerry was using his Sage TCX 5wt.. and 330 Scandi. Since there were too many people splashing and swimming and having a grand ol' time for their holiday we headed down the back side of Church and fished down to the wood shop. It was nice and shady and while the river was a bit high through there it wasn't too bad. However, what was bad were the mosquitoes. Holy smokes, Batman. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Those dive bombing blood sucking monsters were everywhere and they were not shy. We had some pretty good action though this stretch of water and by this time I had switched to the Mystic 9', 4wt. Reaper. That is a nice rod and has a pretty good snap to it. We found some browns but the water was on the warm side. It has been a very strange year for fishing the Farmington and right now it is not one of my best. So much water that it floods some days and then tapers off only to flood again. Right now the rains have held off so perhaps the flow rate will stabilize.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cleo was a sport getting in and out of the car and standing in the water trying to cool off. She even found some mud to lay in and take a long nap. She probably thought we were all crazy but I can tell you that despite the heat and humidity we still had a good time.</div>

I have a window that is right across from me and every so often I pause from what I am doing and just look out. Since the room I am in is on the second floor I do have quite a nice view.<br />
<br />
Last year after the Hurricane Sandy I was sitting there watching the clouds swirl and then the full moon popped out. It was quite the impressive sight! I was able to see the slate grey clouds back-lit by the moonshine swirling in a northerly direction. The trees were gently swaying as the storm slowly made it's way up the coast. After a while I could see the clouds change direction as they started to move in a southerly direction, still back-lit by the moonshine. The storm was on the move further up the coast, leaving lots of damage along the shore but also leaving a beautiful image in my mind that I will not likely forget.<br />
<br />
I also have a beautiful front garden that I can spy on from my vantage point. Actually, the garden takes up pretty much all of the front yard which means less grass to cut! But at times it also holds secrets that can only be seen from above. Like rabbits. There are three cottontails that hang out in the garden. They have the most marvelous antics to watch.<br />

The three of them will charge around the plants as if they were playing a game of bunny hide and seek. One will sneak up on the other and scare the Be-Jesus out of him/her. The rabbit that gets "scared" literally jumps two feet up with paws a-flailing. It is quite the comical sight. </div>

<br />
On some days there are dozens of butterflies flitting from flower to flower. They will hang around for hours and just as mysteriously as they appear they will suddenly disappear.<br />
<br />
In the late summer as the cone flowers have bloomed and are starting to go to seed I will have several gold finches balancing ever so delicately on the head of these flowers as they gently tug at the perfectly ripened seeds. Each year the number of finches has grown and in late July I start looking and listening for their calls.<br />

This is the newest section I added this spring. I imagine that next year I will simply join the two sections into one. May as well as that swath of grass between them is getting smaller and smaller.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So back to my window and leading tying last night.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I took a look out to see what I could see and I saw. Snow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Snow? Naa...wait a minute that's not snow. What? Feathers? Really? Feathers gently floating down past my window from above me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok. Wait a second here. There are quite a few feathers falling down here....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh oh....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The hawk.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yup. I have some hawks that take to hanging around the joint and once in a while I will see a poof of feathers in the front yard where either a red tailed hawk, broad winged hawk other predatory bird has had a snack.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With this in mind I headed out the front door to take a look up to see what happened. Just as I suspected, a broad tailed hawk had snagged a sparrow and was busy pulling the feathers off while perched on top of the chimney cap.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He finished off his meal all the while keeping a wary eye on me. I didn't dare go get the camera because I didn't want to spook him, but it was cool watching him until he finished and flew off. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So now I will get back to my desk for some more leader building and then perhaps some fly tying. Oh, and I will keep an eye out my window just to see what I can see.</div>

This is going to be one fantastic summer.<br />
<br />
First of all my oldest son, Brian is getting married in August to Christie, a lovely young lady. I absolutely adore her and they are the perfect couple.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivW8YbsIkhMt6U6NpSxZpmPYfy75ryER2SWnAJdRlOrWhqTY56Rnmxqo9ZwCmgCL05eXVOqZIKxP11G9ls6xCi4U_lHr0TA5bAxlNgYGssHI_9yQdOQqPUm3g7UA0Zu-ai3x_xu0J6J38N/s1600/739732_10200247630939148_1836519155_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivW8YbsIkhMt6U6NpSxZpmPYfy75ryER2SWnAJdRlOrWhqTY56Rnmxqo9ZwCmgCL05eXVOqZIKxP11G9ls6xCi4U_lHr0TA5bAxlNgYGssHI_9yQdOQqPUm3g7UA0Zu-ai3x_xu0J6J38N/s320/739732_10200247630939148_1836519155_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Brian and Christie</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So I have a big wedding to go to in August out in Wyoming.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
That's right. Wyoming!! Yee-haw. Home to open ranges, cowboys and big rivers for fishing.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You heard me right. Fishing. Mother and son fishing....hopefully if plans go accordingly.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am heading out a week or so before the wedding and Brian and I are going to try to get out. He wants to learn some two handed casting and at the same time we can fish together. It has been a long time since we got to fish together, it should be a memorable time.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Christie won't mind because she is an avid outdoors kinda gal as well. She likes to hunt, fish and go camping right along with Brian. Christie asked me to tie some boutonnieres for the wedding so I did a dozen of 'em based on salmon fly patterns. I can't show any pictures of them yet because their big debut will be on their wedding day. After the wedding I will share some pictures. I was pretty nervous making the flies but all in all I think they are great. Better yet, Brian and Christie love them.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So now I am going to start tying some flies for the trip. Maybe even make a wedding box of special flies. One for Brian and one for Christie.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

</div>
Friday, February 8th. <br />
School was cancelled on Friday as most of New England waited for the impending blizzard. The winter had been pretty mild up to now with some snow storms but nothing of any significance. What little snow we did get had already melted so I took this photo of the backyard as the "before" picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBhyphenhyphenyppPO_x7Fw9mDf6dK-emON6l6IYC1xIg0JmoAZu_WemqtPXFUZlW63JPfiOhCAgKsIuaaitJVaYlyPKLZN_krJ_nLXEs4G8q-0AWA0Is_n3sWOIyA1MFgOEdJtjc2l1wUMwoGqVQjw/s1600/DSC00856.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBhyphenhyphenyppPO_x7Fw9mDf6dK-emON6l6IYC1xIg0JmoAZu_WemqtPXFUZlW63JPfiOhCAgKsIuaaitJVaYlyPKLZN_krJ_nLXEs4G8q-0AWA0Is_n3sWOIyA1MFgOEdJtjc2l1wUMwoGqVQjw/s400/DSC00856.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib8gAiqhG-qBaSx-xOtcNxMFWHCXnpKGZIXqZgPs4zWX2TsxoIzS-vVtHE8Blc1OksJnhg11A0EpuIQurvmBDDHs-4LHzUSMO82IZkh43gUFL3Sd-zAe83kzwBAsPoJbl0kG-UPcPw3BAN/s1600/DSC00859.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib8gAiqhG-qBaSx-xOtcNxMFWHCXnpKGZIXqZgPs4zWX2TsxoIzS-vVtHE8Blc1OksJnhg11A0EpuIQurvmBDDHs-4LHzUSMO82IZkh43gUFL3Sd-zAe83kzwBAsPoJbl0kG-UPcPw3BAN/s400/DSC00859.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
By late afternoon this was all the snow we had and I was starting to think this was a bust!<br />
But by 5pm Friday evening the wind started howling and the snow really started to come down.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo0v9Sy7mtUl5YrWowJGtU5agzj7Qd3I7RtXa20YjeYgA-tg7X0P2az7uzBjhsPWFSBlZrjo4ZCpWhvA9qRdoVOW7oC49dJeoSbdYtku_BGu9YHyArInSvbq5BCrTCOouLnamT8a-1V1Ot/s1600/DSC00861.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo0v9Sy7mtUl5YrWowJGtU5agzj7Qd3I7RtXa20YjeYgA-tg7X0P2az7uzBjhsPWFSBlZrjo4ZCpWhvA9qRdoVOW7oC49dJeoSbdYtku_BGu9YHyArInSvbq5BCrTCOouLnamT8a-1V1Ot/s400/DSC00861.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
By 4am Saturday the wind had drifted the snow up to the back door and we had to push it out just enough for the dog to go outside. She bounded down the steps as she usually does and then hit the landing. As she touched down she ended up being completely covered by snow! She promptly turned around and ran back into the kitchen.<br />
<br />
Shortly after 5am Rob and I were out and trying to clear a path for Cleo. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yeah, we love our dog. We made a nice path out to the yard and a couple of wide spots for her to "take care of business".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While I am sure Cleo was thankful for the work we were doing for her she still didn't want any part of hanging around outside!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once we took care of the back it was time to tackle the driveway. The only way to go out to the driveway was through the back door and garage. The snow had drifted up to the front door and steps and we couldn't get out. </div>

This was Saturday when the wind was a-blowing and a-going. So much wind; but the Sage Z-axiz 8 wt. handled very well. We crossed the river multiple times as our guide took us to one side and then the other side and then back again. Thank goodness he knew where he was going or you could also look at it that he didn't have a clue and just wanted to see how many times we would cross! Either way we had a pretty good day of it. The hits we got came early in the morning and after that it was painfully slow or I should say non-existant.</div>

Disclaimer - sad to say that I had a slight relapse and went to using a single hand rod with an egg pattern and high sticked it. I was very happy to see the indicator go under and quickly set the hook and landed this night steelie. After this I went back to the two handed rod.</div>

Well, we made our annual Thanksgiving trip to Pulaski this year. Last time with guide Loren Williams who accomplished what he probably thought was the impossible - he got Rob into fish on both days and for the first time ever Rob landed fish on both days! Yee-haw. Rob was dead drifting egg patterns and I was swinging. As you can see, Rob had all the luck on this trip. He hooked up 10 times and landed four fish. Friday was just beautiful with temps in the 50's and some sun. Friday night a cold front moved in and so did the wind. I used the T&T 11'7", 7wt. with 454 Skagit Short and she worked like a charm. I could (and did) cast all day with it. This rod makes casting so easy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But.....we headed out despite the conditions and while the wind was gusting close to 25mph (if not more) we still made a day of it. I took out the 8wt. for Sat. and while it did pretty good there were some casts that occurred at the same time as a wind gust and all I could do was watch the d-loop just get pushed up river! Ha! How ridiculously fun!! We were lucky that no snow or rain added to the day's events. </div>

Well, we met today for some fly tying. Jerry showed us how to do some spey flies which I really enjoyed. </div>

Think I will use these on my next trip to the Salmon River. Pretty much the same fly but tied with different feathers; pheasant rump, silver pheasant, and some golden pheasant. This sure is fun.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here we go again! It is deja vu all over. Last year it was the October snowstorm that did us in and who would have thunk that one year later another storm would be taking aim at us. But it is true, Sandy is on her way and from the looks of it she is going to have her way with us.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know about most folk but my storm preparations include fishing before all hell breaks loose. To be honest, there wasn't much preparation that needed to be taken care of since we have a small supply of batteries, flashlights, candles and a double burner camp stove and propane tank from last year. All I needed to get was some soup, chili, ice and that was it - mission accomplished.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So Sat. and Sun. was spent with my buds on the river trying out some new tube flies while enjoying a very productive leaf hatch.</div>

This yellow/black bunny strip tube fly wiggles like mad in the water. Tied by Jerry Jahn, of Spey Casting North East, these flies sure look good and they were the experiment of the weekend. As a matter of fact, they all wiggle like mad in the water! Add some sparkly stuff to them and they really look interesting. I had a nice brookie just smash the black/yellow one.</div>

Hopefully I can get some done before we lose power in this neck of the woods. Power outages have already been reported down along the shore so I am sure it is just a matter of time before we lose it here in W. Hartford.<br />

Hey, the price (almost 50% off) was right; how could I <em>not?</em> Last Sunday I was going to try out the rod to see which lines fit us best when ....<br />
<br />
I grabbed the next piece to put on the butt section and ....<br />
<br />
it did not fit! Oh the horror!! Someone from the factory had taken the 5wt. butt section and then included the 6wt. upper pieces.<br />
<br />
I called Kittery Trading Post (KTP) to find out that they had one left at the store for an exchange. Instead of waiting to complete the exchange through the mail my husband and I decided to make the trip to Kittery. Truth be told, we had not been to KTP before so it seemed like a good idea.<br />
<br />
On Monday, we arrived at the fishing department and met Phred (no, his name is not misspelled). Phred could not believe what happened and he felt absolutely awful about it. Paul, the store manager came looking for me and he was also very attentive at seeing the snafu was taken quickly taken care of. <br />
<br />
Long story short; the customer service that I experienced was outstanding. I have never had a store manager come and look for me to make sure that everything worked out right; they went above and beyond.<br />
<br />
You can bet that my husband and I will visit KTP again. <br />
<br />

Farmington River Temps.It would appear that the water temps. are starting a much needed cooling trend. The Farmy was approximately 70cfs this morning and the still was approximatley 30cfs.<br />
<br />
I used the same method as my previous posting. I even visited the same locations as my previous post; the only thing different was the time of day. <br />
<br />
Still no fishing for me, however, I will be out on the river practicing my skagit casting!<br />
<br />
<br />
wt = water temp.<br />at = air temp.<br /><br />

I headed up the Farmington today - all the way to Massachusetts where it enters the Colebrook Reservoir. The dam release this morning was 57cfs and there was 44cfs reported from the Still. </div>

Here is the Colebrook Dam in the background. No boats in the water which I would imagine is because the water level is too far below the boat ramp.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then I continued to the Still River and stopped at the USGS monitor station. This morning the Still was 44cfs and at 11:15 am I took a water temperature (wt) of 72F and the air temperature (at) was 76F. I taped my thermometer on a stick so that it was approximately 3" above river bottom and used that for the readings today. I also walked out to the deepest part of each stop (which wasn't too far) to take the temperature. The water at each stop was above my knees.</div>

I drove up the river the on Wednesday this week.The first two pictures are from the bridge in Riverton; I have never seen the river this low. Right now we are approximately 7" below normal rainfall for the year. People have spoken of water temperatures in the mid 70's as well as dead trout. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I saw a couple of kids "tubing". They weren't really tubing since they were out of their tubes and pulling the tube behind them as they walked down the center of the river. I realize that some people still fish in the early morning or evening, which is their decision and one I respect. Me? I just can't do it, the fish are under too much stress with 80cfs and the warm temperatures. The days here have continued to be very warm with highs in the upper 80's to low 90's and the nights have "cooled" down to 75F, these changes in temperature do not, in my opinion, allow the fish time to recover. So....to pass away the time I am tying some wet flies and thinking about starting on some steelhead flies as well. </div>

<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
Ok, so for two days I had to stay off the river. Why? Thunder storms and lightning and not necessarily in that order. Tuesday I headed up early afternoon got a couple of hits but then the wind picked up and so did the clouds; those big storm clouds in the picture above were a warning of things to come! But I tried some more until a piece of the coating on my running line fell off - ok, someone is telling me to head on home and so I did!</div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
So Wed. and Thur. last week were no fishing days because of the weather and most particularly the thunderstorms and lightning. Wed., the conditions were just about right for a chance of a tornado to roll through, but as it was only a very severe thunderstorm cam on by. Thursday was more of the same and since I really have an aversion for lightning I did not head out.</div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
Saturday was another epic warning from the weather watchers for "high winds, thunder storms". So early Sat. morning I headed out early to try my luck before any storm activity rolled in. As luck would have it, I was out but the fish were no where to be found. By Sat. afternoon the lightning was cracking, the skies were very ominous and then it rained. It rained hard for over an hour and by that time the river was turning chocolate and rising from the 1.8" of rainfall. Still not enough to make up for the almost 5" defecit we have in the area.</div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
Sunday Rob and I headed up early. The river had come down and bit and was still dirty, but we had decided to fish farther up river and closer to the damn release. We ended up meeting up with Fred, Jerry, Lisa and Stark and fished the afternoon. It was better weather with a few light showers but no lightning! Lisa was killin' 'em with a Silver Doctor tube fly that Jerry gave. She got the Farmington Grand Slam - brookie, bows and browns. The browns she landed were all really big fish too.</div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
So I was headed up today but last checked the flow rate and the release from the damn is now 117cfs and I just can't bring myself to do it. I just hope it doesn't stay that low for too long. If it does I will take the fishing and put that on the back burner and just do some practice casting while checking out new parts of the river.</div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
Looks like today is a good fly tying kinda day. Think I will try some tube flies while praying for rain.</div>

Jerry Jahn tied up this aluminum tube fly and I used it yesterday. A 12" bow smacked this thing and he smacked it HARD. </div>Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14171360403143236615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441948624827691334.post-9509512250988055812012-07-27T11:26:00.001-07:002012-07-27T11:27:09.544-07:00Ok, who did it?Who made the weather Gods mad? Two days now of thunderstorms has put an end to my daily fishing trips. Bummer.....will try again tomorrow. So much for my "big streak!" ha!Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14171360403143236615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441948624827691334.post-33465360459607959222012-07-23T18:41:00.001-07:002012-07-23T18:41:54.548-07:00How many days...I got to wondering today about how many days in a row can I get out and go fishing?<br />
<br />
I was out last Wed., as well as Thursday and Friday. <br />
<br />
Saturday and Sunday were two epic days of fishing.<br />
<br />
So today I decided to head out between thunderstorms, or so I thought and only managed about 90 minutes worth before thunder was too close for comfort. I am a BIG chicken when it comes to lightning. There was one afternoon (several years ago) when I was trying to high tail it out to the car and there was another angler on the trail in front of me. I kindly requested that he either step off to the side or he could have size 8 Korker boot prints up one side and down the other becuause I was on a mission to get the hell out and fast. He was very kind and stepped off to the side!<br />
<br />
So currently I am at 6 days and and about 15 fish landed.<br />
<br />
Guess I will keep it a game and see what happens tomorrow.Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14171360403143236615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441948624827691334.post-49886164869140223022012-07-21T18:01:00.003-07:002012-07-21T18:01:58.760-07:00A pretty good day of it<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Lisa and I spent most of the day on the Farmy today. It was so nice to have 73F for a change with clear blue skies and very little wind.<br />
<br />
Lisa had a really good day landing three bows; each one bigger than the last. Unfortunately, I left the camera in the car and missed the first bow. <br />
<br />
The second one I also missed because I was sharing some flies with another angler who was below us.<br />
<br />
The third, and biggest for her today I had the camera out and ready to go when the fish flopped and disappeared. I told her to grab the line and get it back in but she had unhooked it! <br />
